Bike Fest SA is revving up for 2020 with a legendary five-stop South African biking tour. Bikers with a love of sandy beaches and great rides should diarise the 25 to 27 April when Bike Fest SA makes its second stop on the road trip – the tourist-friendly town of Port Edward on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast.

“Port Edward is the ultimate outdoor lifestyle and entertainment destination, with warm beaches and an even warmer community,” said event organiser, Vicky Wentzel – owner of Wozani Africa Events and co-founder of Africa Bike Week. “It is the perfect location for the second festival on the Bike Fest SA 2020 route, keeping that well-loved South Coast vibe with a refreshing new flavour.”

Partnering with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, the Port Edward Bike Fest will attract thousands of visitors, both regionally and from further afield. This massive boost in visitor numbers is set to highlight this incredible tourism gem while giving the local economy a boost.

Nomusa Mqwebu, Mayor of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, has been a firm supporter of the bike fest since it first kickstarted on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast in 2009. Having witnessed the positive impact these festivals have had on the region and its community, Mqwebu said: “This municipality has always offered support and is entrenched in the biking festival culture stretching back to the first Africa Bike Week, then onto the South Coast Bike Fest brand and now, the newly envisioned, South Coast’s Port Edward Bike Fest.”

Research has shown the enormous benefits of bike festival events over the years. The 2016 Africa Bike Week brought in between R150 million and R260 million with 69% of the visitors coming from out of KwaZulu-Natal staying over for three to four nights. In 2018, despite widespread floods just two days before, the South Coast Bike Festival was a resounding success, attracting 13 427 patrons, 92% of whom were from out of town.

Max Mbili, the Municipal Manager of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality, said these results show the importance of retaining an event of this nature in the municipal area: “The Port Edward Bike Fest will shine its headlights on another idyllic coastal village. Port Edward is deserving of such positive exposure and is also positioned as the gateway to the beautiful Eastern Cape province. While stimulating growth for the local economy and tourism, the event incorporates previously disadvantaged communities while promoting social cohesion.”

The Port Edward Bike Fest will celebrate the adventurous spirit of the modern biking and music enthusiast while retaining the strong sense of ‘old school’ biker traditions that make biking such an iconic pastime. Visitors to the 2020 biking festival will get to enjoy three days of top-notch biking displays, a range of on-brand stalls and an unmissable line-up of South African music suited to all tastes.

This picturesque coastal location boasts endless tourism activities, from relaxing on the banks of the Pont River and beaches to visiting local nature reserves and retailers. Some of the top Port Edward tourist activities include:

• Visiting the world’s smallest desert, The Red Desert
• Meeting the rehabilitated inhabitants of Crag’s View Farm

This all-inclusive biking event has been geared towards bikers and event patrons with numerous accommodation options available. For a party, play and camp experience there is a beachside campsite with limited glamping sites available. Other top venue options include The Port Edward Holiday Resort, The Pont Holiday Resort and The Wild Coast Sun & Casino Resort. Shuttle buses will be available to transport patrons between accommodation and event areas.
